ACTNXT

To achieve climate neutrality, Europe must rely heavily on Power-to-X (PtX) technologies to replace fossil fuel applications that cannot be easily electrified. However, many PtX technologies remain immature or not yet deployment-ready, underscoring the need for sustained research and development.

Neutron and synchrotron sources can play a crucial role in advancing PtX technology, but current limitations in key instrumentation restrict their potential impact. ACTNXT will upgrade instrumentation at existing neutron and synchrotron facilities across Europe to provide essential insights into PtX efficiency, safety, cost-effectiveness, raw material consumption, and durability.

The project will develop instrumentation for:

- Operando measurements of processes and flows within PtX components

- Materials behavior under hydrogen exposure

- Reliable, high-throughput investigation of novel materials

- Operando measurements of hazardous chemical reactions

This instrumentation will be designed for broad adoption as upgrades at research facilities throughout Europe. Prototypes of all four instrumentation types will be constructed at leading research infrastructures, where their capabilities will be tested and demonstrated. A common knowledge platform will address shared challenges including safety protocols and complex experiment planning.

Through strong engagement with user communities, the consortium will ensure the instrumentation meets real-world needs and that users are prepared to fully utilize these capabilities beyond the project's conclusion. ACTNXT aims to accelerate Europe's green industry and secure a significant share of the emerging trillion-euro PtX market.
